Illustration and Visual Development
Cryptid Watching is an illustration that pokes fun at the act of people watching. My inspiration was taken from my own family, who love to people watch as well as the strange stories collected from people who have rode public transit every day. Instead of just showing regular city-goers I chose instead to paint them as friendly monsters and cryptids from popular culture. There is only one human girl, sitting mystified by her fellow passengers as she sports an “I Believe” t-shirt. This girl is meant to represent the kind of person who would enjoy the unusual ongoings of public places, such as the subway.
For this illustration I chose to use an energetic palette of reds, oranges and yellows for the background and certain accents. Then, I made the monsters hues of purple. This way, the monsters would be the obvious main subjects and pop effectively against the subway environment.
